  • Class Description

Date and time: Saturday, March 2nd, 2024 1-4:30pm EST

Location: Major Abbas Ali Park, 180 McLevin Ave, Scarborough, ON, M1B 6H7

This event supports the initiative by @kitesforgaza to join in solidarity for our brothers and sisters in Gaza: Kites for Gaza (Instagram). For the children of Gaza, kites symbolize freedom and have long been a symbol of resistance. In 2011, they broke the world record for flying 12,350 kites at Al-Waha beach, many – if not all – of which were homemade.

On March 2nd and every first Saturday of the month, around the world, families will gather to honor Gaza’s martyrs and raise awareness for the ongoing genocide being committed against the people of Gaza. Our hope is to fill the skies of Toronto with black, red, white and green, and raise as many funds as possible.

The event will consist of 2 parts:

1-3pm – Live Story performance of ‘King for a Day’ and Kite-making Workshop hosted by Seedlings of Jannah. Ages 6-10. Single ticket (1 child) – $30. Family ticket (1+ child) – $40. Please note that the duration, age range and class size refer to the workshop component only, All ages are welcome to the public kite flying event.

2:30-4:30pm – Family Kite-flying Event – If you will not be attending the kite-making workshop, you may borrow a kite at the event ($10) or bring your own (free). If you plan to attend, please register ahead of time so that we can ensure there are enough kites for everyone.

The registration fee for this event will cover the cost of materials and 100% of proceeds will be donated to the MATW Project. MATW’s Palestine Emergency Appeal has a 100% donation policy and is on the ground working day and night to send life-saving supplies to families in need.

***In the spirit of sustainability, we are also collecting used & new kites that will be used for this event & future kite-flying events, InshaAllah. Contact Seedlings of Jannah or Deenward to drop off on or before March 2. Drop off locations are in Scarborough and Mississauga, ON.***
