Teach San Diego Students About the Lemon Grove Incident

San Diego County Office of Education, All School Districts of San Diego County

Roberto Alvarez V. Board of Trustees of the Lemon Grove School District, commonly called The Lemon Grove Incident, is a desegregation case that took place in San Diego Superior Court in 1931. It is recognized as the first successful school desegregation case in United States history and the San Diego History Center considers it to be historically significant.

The Lemon Grove Incident occurred 23 years before the Brown V. Board of Education Topeka of 1954 and served as a precedent for other cases, such as the Mendez V. Westminster case of 1945, which established legal arguments used during the landmark decision outlawing racial segregation in schools.

Curriculum for the Lemon Grove Incident has been developed and adopted by the Lemon Grove School District, and has not been incorporated into standard curriculum throughout San Diego County public school districts.

We call on San Diego County Office of Education and all school districts within San Diego County to adopt curriculum on the Lemon Grove Incident and teach it as part of Social Studies and History in all K-12 schools.
